Matthew James Gamlen is a Designer, Art Director, and Filmmaker based in Portland, OR. His expansive portfolio spanning nearly two decades encompasses films, commercials, music videos, title sequences, stage visuals, live installations, photography, brand design, and interactive experiences. His work in both the film industry and creative agencies has given him a rare versatility, allowing him to seamlessly blend mediums to craft captivating stories and elegant, meaningful visual systems.
Matthew’s work explores the convergence of art, technology, and culture. Driven by his curiosity for the myriad layers of texture, pattern, frequency, and form in the natural world, his renowned visual style draws on geometry, optical illusion, psychedelics, and science fiction. In live action, he employs experimental art direction and lighting techniques, practical visual effects, high speed cinematography, robotic motion control, and projection mapping.
In the past, Matthew has been fortunate to work with and learn from some of the most brilliant people in the industry at companies like Wieden+Kennedy, Instrument, Cinco Design, North, Tangible Worldwide, and other top agencies and studios. He’s led award-winning work for major brands, including Adidas, Google, Laika, Nike, Pitchfork, Smith, Sony, Target, TEDx, T-Mobile, and Vice. He also helped shape music filmmaking collective, Into The Woods, and continues to direct music videos today.
Outside of industry work, Matthew is an avid photographer, shooting in both film and digital formats. His love for wilderness exploration and extensive travels have enriched his view of the world and artistic point of view. He is a strong advocate for the environment and traditional cultures, contributing his expertise to media-related projects for indigenous peoples and other non-profit organizations. Matthew believes in the power of art and copy to amplify ideas, stories, and products that unite and empower people to create a better future.
